Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance is one of the most important purchases you can make. Not only are you protecting your home, but you're protecting your family and the lifetime of memories you will create in that home. Each home is unique, which means your homeowners policy should be custom-tailored for you too. Whether you're purchasing your first home, building a custom dream home, or downsizing after retirement, we can help protect your investment.

What is homeowners insurance?

In short, homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it.

A homeowners policy covers both damage to your property AND your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.

Damage caused by most disasters is covered but there are exceptions. The most significant are damage caused by floods, earthquakes and poor maintenance. However, you can purchase separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage. Maintenance-related problems are the homeowners' responsibility.

What does homeowners insurance cover?

Homeowners insurance covers the hazards that most homeowners face—everything from fire to theft, a cracked foundation to accidents on your property. When a loss occurs, you will file a claim with your insurance carrier and you are paid for the expenses, minus any outstanding deductible amounts.

Insurance also covers personal liability exposures, to protect you from many situations that could lead to lawsuits from others.

For instance, if someone slips and falls in your home, or is injured somewhere on your property, you can be held responsible. Liability coverage is there to protect you.

Homeowners insurance can help cover:

  • Storm damage, fire, windstorm, lightning and hail, to name a few.
  • Dog bite liability (standard liability may not be enough if your dog bites someone or causes them to become injured, so consider your pets carefully)
  • Trampoline or swimming pool liability insurance
  • Wind damage
  • Sinkholes
  • Flood damage
  • Replacement cost for personal property
  • Umbrella liability insurance

Why do you need homeowners insurance?

It is really all about protecting yourself financially if something unexpected happens to your home or possessions. That's important because chances are your home is likely one of your largest investments.

  • If your home was destroyed by fire or damaged by a natural disaster, you'd need money to repair or replace it.
  • If a guest in your home is injured, liability protection and medical coverage help pay expenses.
  • If you are a victim of theft and vandalism, it can reimburse you for your loss or pay for repairs.
  • If you are still paying for your home, your lender will require insurance.

It is important to know that homeowners insurance is meant to cover unexpected damage, not routine maintenance.
