Boating Insurance
What floats your boat?
Getting out on the water in your boat, jet ski, or other watercraft is likely one of your favorite ways to enjoy the Great Northwest. But owning a boat can increase liability risks (even when you’re on dry land.)
Do I need boat insurance?
If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you are not required by law to carry boat insurance. Currently, there are only two states that have this requirement: Arkansas and Utah.
However, a boat insurance policy can help you stay afloat financially should you hit any unforeseen crosswinds or rough water.
And remember, before hitting the water in Washington, you do need to complete a boating safety course and obtain your Boater Education Card.
Does my homeowner's insurance cover my boat?
Maybe, if it’s parked in your driveway. In other words, a homeowner's insurance policy will only cover damage to your boat that occurs while it is on your property.
Unfortunately, that means you won't be covered if you're in a boating accident at the lake. If you don't carry a specific boat insurance policy, you are probably underinsured, which can make for troubled waters if you lose control of your craft, sustain damage or sink, or a guest causes an accident.
Your best bet is to purchase a boat insurance policy, which will cover your watercraft - on AND off the water.
