Creating a "Safety Net" for foster kids in Spokane

| October 24, 2016

Every morning I listen to the Dave, Ken & Molly show on our local radio station 92.9 KZZU. One morning, Molly started chatting about Safety Net, a local non-profit that helps kids aging out of the foster care system. A lot of foster kids turn 18 and need to make it on their own, without a home or a source of income. Safety Net helps kids know they aren’t forgotten. They provide clothing, household items, and even bus passes for these kids starting out on their own. This grabbed my attention for a few reasons.

First, I always wondered what happens to a lot of these great foster kids after they graduate high school. Who helps them transition into the real world? I went to school with a few foster kids, and it seemed like they kind of got lost in the hubbub of high school graduation and moving on to college. The support of Safety Net helps take the sting out of the living expenses for these kids, who are usually still in high school.

Second, it seems like I am always cleaning out a closet and finding gently used (or even new) clothes and items around my house. It’s good to know there is a need in our community, and I can donate to an organization like Safety Net, knowing it’s going to a great local cause to help kids furnish their first place.

Third, I love hearing the stories Molly tells of the many kids that have gone on to do great things or even just got a foot on the right path. This little, but powerful, organization is helping kids in our community. They host a few events each year, including an art auction I’ve attended for the last two years. This year they raised $38,000 for kids in our community.

We can all help. A little or a lot, every bit helps. All Lines Insurance is partnering with Safety Net, which means we will donate $10 to them for every referral we receive through the end of the year. Our goal is to donate $1,000 to Safety Net, and we need your help to do it! Refer your friends, family, and colleagues to us for an insurance quote, and we will make the $10 donation just because they gave us a call. Please ask your loved ones to contact All Lines at 509-327-1658.
